We know, the Blue & the Yellow are the opposite colors, i.e. Blue + Yellow = White. But, at the time of painting, when we mix the Blue & Yellow color up, we get the Green. Why?
First of all we have to know why we see the Blue bodies Blue, Yellow bodies Yellow or Red bodies Red. We know that, color is a property of matters. This is because, the molecules of a matter having a particular color reflects only that electromagnetic wave (having a particular wavelength) of the color which does the matter have when lighten up.
At the time of painting, when we mix the Blue & Yellow color up, actually the molecules of Blue & Yellow color get mixed up. So, from those mixed molecules, we can get bunch of Blue & Yellow Electro Magnetic waves mixed together.
The colors of rainbow :
- Violet
- Indigo
- Blue
- Green
- Yellow
- Orange
- Red

So, here, we see that, Blue, Green & Yellow are right beside each other. The colors of rainbow are arranged in wavelength wise. That means, the wavelength of Blue < the wavelength of Green < the wavelength of Yellow.
Now, consider two Electro Magnetic waves with different wavelengths. So, there will be different Electro Magnetic fields with different strengths for each. Electro Magnetic fields of different strengths attract each other. [Assume the lower one with –ve & the higher one with +ve]
As two Electro Magnetic waves with different wavelengths attract each other, they will be overlapped, so there will be created an Electro Magnetic wave with middle wavelength replacing the two waves by the superimposition of those two waves of different wavelengths. When this occurs for a bunch of waves, there is created few Electro Magnetic waves with middle wavelength between the two types of bunch of waves.
Now, when we mix the blue & yellow color up, then the Electro Magnetic waves emitted from the Blue molecule & the Yellow molecule get mixed up & Green wave is created which is having the middle wavelength of Blue & Yellow wave.

On the other hand, the Newton’s Disk is colored by different colors in different sections on the disk. So, there are no such possibilities of mixing up the waves emitted from the colors. When we operate the Newton’s Color Disk, the Blue waves enter in our eye within 1/10 sec of the entry of the Yellow waves. So, here, no waves get overlapped, the Blue & Yellow colors get mixed up in our eyes & we see White.
So, we can conclude that, if the sources of the Blue & the Yellow colors (molecules of Blue & Yellow colors) get mixed up, we see the Green. & if the Blue & the Yellow colors get mixed up in our eyes, we see the White.
- Now we will mix the Blue & the Yellow colors in a different way :
If we overlap a Blue transparent sheet & an Yellow transparent sheet on each other, there forms Black color on the area where the shades of Yellow transparent sheet & Blue transparent sheet get merged. Beside this, we can see that the shade of Yellow transparent sheet is Yellow & the shade of Blue transparent sheet is Blue. We know, when a body having a particular color is lighten up, that body absorbs all the electromagnetic waves of the colors from that light, but reflects (in case of solid body) or allows to pass through (in case of transparent body) only that electromagnetic wave (having a particular wavelength) of the color which does the body have.

So, when we put a Blue transparent sheet between a light source and a canvas, that sheet will absorb all the colors from that light except Blue and will allow the Blue to pass through as it is transparent. So, now we can consider that Blue transparent sheet as a source of Blue light. If we put a Yellow transparent sheet between the Blue transparent sheet and the canvas, the Yellow transparent sheet will absorb the Blue color and no other color will pass on as here Blue is the only color. So, there will form Black color on the area where the shades of Yellow transparent sheet & Blue transparent sheet get merged. So, here the Blue & the Yellow colors are not getting mixed actually, they are getting vanished.
